For cagrilintide, begin with availability
Cagrilintide and CagriSema had no approved US product as of September 28, 2026.
- Ask whether an advertised quote is for visits, a named medicine, or both.
- Keep that answer separate from any claim about insurance.
An approved alternative brings its own questions
Wegovy (semaglutide) had FDA approval for weight management at the September 26, 2026 check.
The US agency that regulates drugs is called the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA.
Ozempic (semaglutide) had uses for adults with type 2 diabetes, but no weight-loss approval at that check.
- The list of drugs an insurance plan covers is called its formulary.
- Prior authorization means the plan agrees ahead of time to pay.
- Ask about the exact product and the intended use, rather than the ingredient name alone.
Medicare has a temporary route with conditions
Medicare’s Bridge program offered certain weight medicines for $50 a month to adults who met its rules. This was checked September 26, 2026.
The program was scheduled to start on July 1, 2026 and end on December 31, 2027.
The Bridge paid separately from Part D, Medicare’s usual prescription drug coverage.
In 2026, a central service handled requests for permission to pay and payments to pharmacies for the Bridge.
- The product list included Wegovy (semaglutide) shots and tablets, as of September 26, 2026.
- Ozempic (semaglutide) for weight loss alone was not on the Bridge product list at the September 26, 2026 check.
- People with type 2 diabetes were excluded from the Bridge at that check. Their medicine may be covered through ordinary Part D instead.
- The rules required age 18 or older. They also used a height-and-weight measure called BMI.
- A BMI of 35 or more met the weight requirement. Lower BMI levels needed certain health conditions as well.
- Ask your prescriber to check your height, weight and health history against the official eligibility page below.
- Eligible plan types were a separate Part D plan for drugs or a Medicare Advantage plan that both coordinates care and covers drugs.
- Ask your plan to check whether your exact plan type qualifies.
- Receiving a GLP-1 medicine, such as semaglutide, through Part D during 2026 ruled out the Bridge for 2026.
- A prescription and the Bridge’s permission to pay in advance were required.
- Ask the prescriber and pharmacy how they would request that permission for the Bridge.
FDA approval does not guarantee that an insurance plan will pay.
